ORGANIZING ENTITIES

In the following text, we introduce the entities in the performance arts sector and the cultural management that forms part of the Escenium 2010 technical commission.

ADGAE

Distribution is a key element in the Performance Arts System. Indeed. Moreover, distributors are affiliated. ADGAE is the Association of Performance Arts Management and Distribution [In Spanish, La Asociación de Empresas de Distribución y Gestión de las Artes Escénicas], accounting for 82.7% of Spanish territory as well as more than 200 distribution companies.

At ADGAE, we take responsibility for the medium’s professional expertise, from people that know the way the System operates, a show’s production from the beginning of the idea to the finale itself. We defend the expert committed to the artistic act ahead of other unique and exclusive marketing attitudes.

For ADGAE, every show must have an adequate presentation to its audience. All creative processes look for a suitable distribution and a dissemination that contributes to its success and the audience’s enjoyment.

COFAE. THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT’S PERFORMANCE ART SHOW COORDINATOR [IN SPANISH, COORDINADORA DE FERIAS DE ARTES ESCÉNICAS DEL ESTADO ESPAÑOL]

The Coordinator role was created in 2006. The Coordinator puts together 14 of the most important performance art shows in Spain. This exhibition alliance’s most notable objectives are the promotion, improvement, and establishment of better coordination, knowledge, communication, and collaboration between the various components. This includes carrying out and publicizing theoretical studies for greater awareness of the complex structure of the performance arts arena. The Spanish Government’s Performance art Show Coordinator has consolidated itself in just three years as a representative body for the establishment of collaborations with other entities and bodies, serving as a qualified interlocutor between them.

Each of these shows is noteworthy and singular but all have a common objective: to connect professionals and thus to facilitate business transactions.

FAETEDA

The National Federation of Theater and Dance Company Associations [In Spanish, La Federación Estatal de Asociaciones de Empresas de Teatro y Danza (FAETEDA)] was created in November, 1996 with the clear objective of promoting industrialization, modernization, encouragement, and structuring of the theater sector in our country.

It is an entity formed by the professional theater and dance professional associations within the Spanish Autonomous Communities. There are currently 17 professional Associations within the 15 Autonomous Communities.
These associations bring together the majority of companies, producers, distributors, and exhibiters of theater and dance in the entire country, of which produce more than 80% of the shows in our country and create work for more than 5,000 professionals.
FAETEDA supports artistic and business dialogue between the different Autonomous Communities as well as a close relationship with the rest of the representative professional associations amongst the different performance arts groups in Spain.
Moreover, the entity is integrated into PEARLE, the European League of Performance Arts Business Associations [in Spanish, Liga Europea de Asociaciones de Empresarios de Artes Escénicas].

FECED

The National Federation of Dance Companies and Groups [In Spanish, the Federación Estatal de Compañías y Empresas de Danza] is made up of three associations in the sector from three different Autonomous Communities:

  • AVED, The Association of Valencian Dance Companies [In Spanish, the Asociación Valenciana de Empresas de Danza].
  • ACPDC, The Catalonian Association of Professional Dance Companies [In Catalan, the Associació de Companyies Professionals de Dansa de Catalunya].
  • EMPRENDO DANZA, in Madrid.

The three associations have aligned different structures at their core that pertain to production and/or dissemination of information activities about dance shows. These structures are essentially companies and businesses responsible for promoting dance.

The FECED defends the interests of the creators involved in the companies and partner businesses. The Federation fundamentally deals with improving the sector’s conditions, both in a quantitative-economic manner and a qualitative-social one.
We, the members of the FECED, want to enhance our artists’ creativity and upward mobility and with this motivation, reduce the distance between the citizen-spectator and the artistic act. We will not forget that much of this motivation depends on the economic agility of companies that finance creative people. Improving upon this economic agility, we frequently improve creativity and upward mobility.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CULTURAL MANAGERS [IN SPANISH, FEDERACIÓN ESTATAL DE ASOCIACIONES DE GESTORES CULTURALES (ESPAÑA)-FEAGC]

The FEAGC was founded in 1999. Its principal objectives are to promote professional awareness of cultural managers, promote the implementation of continuing training for cultural management and to serve as interlocutors within public or private bodies throughout the country that are dedicated to culture.

En 2005 a renaissance period took place, leading to a noteworthy creation of documents: statutes reform, FEAGC White Paper and a Founding Document in the Cultural Management Profession.
Beginning in 2008, we have entered into a fase de despeguegoing from 9-15 associations:

  • In the creation of documents: Cultural Manager Job Position description, Cultural Management Code of Ethics, Guidelines on Cultural Management and Universal Accessibility, update of the FEAGC White Paper, Toledo Declaration, Declaration of Intentions for the Creation of a European Organization for Cultural Managers, Declaration of Intentions for a Worldwide Cultural Management Organization.
  • In internal activities: International Congress of the Professionalization of Cultural Management within the European Framework (Toledo) and the International Congress of Cultural Management within the European Framework (El Ejido-Almeria).
  • Publicity: creation of the (www.federacion-agc.es) website and the FEAGC e-newsletter.

Fundacion Autor

The Fundacion Autor was created in 1997 with the goal of promoting cultural and welfare activities that the General Society of Authors and Editors [in Spanish, la Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE)] had created. It is a tool that creative people have brought to light to supply the fruit of their work to the company in an independent and self-governing fashion. The SGAE, via the Fundacion Autor, has developed a promotional project for its authors to be entered into the public record. The Fundacion Autor has thus become one of the most important cultural agitators and activists in Spain.
Amongst its principal activities are the promotion of the public record for its authors, (Music Prizes, Max Prizes [Premios de la Música, Premios Max, etc.), cultural management training, creative skills, intellectual property and emerging technologies, economy and culture research, cultural consumption habits, sociology, studies by industry sector, etc., publication of creative texts (screenplays, biographies, reports, discs, etc.) . An additional principal objective is the welfare of our members through the General Mutual Benefit Association for authors and editors.

SAREA

The Basque Network of Theaters [In Spanish, La Red Vasca de Teatros], SAREA, was founded in 1993 with the goal of driving interest and coordinating stable and interesting quality programming in theater and dance through collaborative work amongst different institutions, City Halls, Regional Councils and the Basque Government and is made up of more than 50 performance spaces.

In addition to what has already been commented on, emphasized principal objectives are to support the improvement of programming, disseminate and promote performance spaces, promote interesting Basque productions, spread performance arts, and promote the creation and development of an audience in the performance arts field.

One of SAREA’s most important tools is the RECOMMENDED WORKS CATALOG, a catalog that aspires to assume the leading catalog position, and due to its special affinity and synthesis with the interests of SAREA planners, offers the most appropriate response to the concrete needs.

Welcome to the Escenium 2010 blog

This blog is aimed at generating a space for reflection and debate for all the professionals and people interested in the performing arts sector to compare opinions.

Different experts will start threads on different topics to start debates before the meeting, and that can also be used as a collective reflection space after the event.
